Arrival of Wind Scylla marks another milestone for Connecticut, Port of New London

Executive Director Kristin Urbach joined Gov. Ned Lamont and others July 26 for a tour of Wind Scylla, the first offshore wind turbine installation vessel to call on the Port of New London.

This historic visit signaled the start of construction for Revolution Wind, Connecticut’s first offshore wind farm, some 35 miles southeast of the coastline. Wind Scylla was in New London to take on crew and provisions and will serve as a working platform from which the 65 wind turbines of Revolution Wind will be installed over the next many months. The first foundation was installed in May.

“The arrival of Wind Scylla in New London further demonstrates the strength of Connecticut’s role in offshore wind,” Kristin said after her tour. “It is so impressive to see this unique vessel docked at State next to a barge already loaded with blades and a nacelle ready for shipping to Revolution Wind and the rest of State Pier filling up with more blades, towers, and nacelles.”

Wind Scylla is 492 feet long and 164 feet wide. She is equipped with a 1,500-ton crane and four, 344-foot “legs” that when deployed into the seabed are used to raise the vessel above the water ensuring stability for workers. It is also equipped with a helipad, which served as a great vantage point for viewing all the activity on State Pier and a perfect spot for photos!

Revolution Wind, the first multi-state offshore wind farm, will supply 304 megawatts to Connecticut and 400 megawatts to Rhode Island to provide clean energy for more than 350,000 homes. The wind farm will be connected to the power grid at Quonset Point, Rhode Island.

Ulysses Hammond, interim Executive Director of the Connecticut Port Authority, led the tour, which included New London Mayor Michael Passero, New London Director of Development and Planning Felix Reyes, and Connecticut Wind Collaborative Board Member Paul Whitescarver, who is Executive Director of the Southeastern CT Enterprise Region.
